October's Charm: Letters From Home

Early October morning. The baby stirs, the day threatening to begin. So I get out of bed to pull some warm clothes on, but while I do he settles back to sleep. So I crawl right back in between baby and my husband and snuggle until our 7:30 alarm. It was so lovely, in that half-asleep state, warmed by bodies and love, listening to the cars slosh by through all the rain we got overnight. There has been a lot of rain. Such is October.

I am now over 2 months postpartum and my days have been filled with hot cups of coffee, naps, laundry, and lately, making the autumn home. It is that inevitable shift that arrives this month each year—the pull inward, the urge to sweep the cobwebs from corners and organize jars in cupboards. It’s almost the holiday season, and then the feeling of home will matter a great deal. Time to get some curtains hanging in the kitchen and garlic planted in the garden.

After what felt like a really long summer, the windows are closed and our furnace is on. Our first autumn in this home. It has been so fun to watch the light shift throughout the house and to hear the leaves scatter and acorns fall from the big oak tree that sits just right outside our back door. Cozy comfort meals are eaten from our autumn plates and autumn bowls and beeswax candles offer a warm glow to the gloomy days. I have been baking chocolate crinkle cookies & pumpkin pancakes, while a bowl of pears awaits to be turned into sauce. And goodness, doesn’t maple candied bacon sound delightful? Adding that to the menu…

If you are wondering how to cozy up your home for the season ahead, try rearranging a lamp to a new corner, adding some quilted plaid on the couch, displaying some sort of baked good on the counter or table, and keep a pot of soup simmering on the stove.

I will try to write here more! I have every intention to! Creating blog-form content is something that never loses its charm to me. But I have determined to fit life around my baby and not my baby around my life. So that makes sitting down here a little difficult sometimes. I hope you all are enjoying the coziness of the season. Talk soon!!
