Turn Thine Eyes from Worthless Things
It is a cozy, gloomy morning. I write to you from my desk with a cup of coffee and the glow of beeswax candles. As I'm listening to gentle hymns and the sound of the rain, I am reminded of Acts 14:15-17:
“Men, why are you doing these things? We also are men, of like nature with you, and we bring you good news, that you should turn from these vain things to a living God, who made the heaven and the earth and the sea and all that is in them. In past generations he allowed all the nations to walk in their own ways. Yet he did not leave himself without witness, for he did good by giving you rains from heaven and fruitful seasons, satisfying your hearts with food and gladness.”
The Lord does not leave himself without witness. Think of this wonderful season of autumn we are in—it's entirely impossible to look around at the vibrant colors lining the trees and not wonder and marvel at the One who created them! But even greater is the fact that we aren't left in our wonder and marvel…
Because of Christ we are invited to fellowship and communion with the very Living God that created such beauty!
“And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.” (2 Corinthians 3:18)
“For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.” (Romans 1:20)
“Turn my eyes from looking at worthless things; and give me life in your ways.” (Psalm 119:37)
“I will walk with integrity of heart within my house; I will not set before my eyes anything that is worthless.” (Psalm 101:2-3)
“The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light, but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness.” (Matthew 6:22-23)
May these simple truths encourage us to turn from our own vain things and find satisfaction and gladness in Him alone.
