Reclaiming Coffee: Slow and Sustainable Coffee Routine

machines

Here’s the thing: most people don’t know they’re drinking crappy coffee. I sure didn’t! Until I tasted the real deal. Coffee makers and keurigs are full of plastic tubes and parts, laden with toxic chemicals. When the hot water goes through the system, all of those toxins are then brewed into your coffee. It doesn’t taste good nor is it good for you. (Yes, everything has chemicals these days, but by being aware, we can actively take the steps needed to avoid them.) Not only that, but the inability to properly clean the machines (yes, even if there’s a “self cleaning” option) leaves bacteria festering in the inner works, which also then ends up into your coffee.

the pour-over method

I used a typical drip coffee machine and a Keurig for years before unintentionally stumbling upon pour-over coffee, and I haven’t gone back since. My coffee is cleaner, crisper, tastes amazing, and requires absolutely no machine.

While some tools are necessary, look at it as an investment that will pay off longterm. Let’s face it, coffee machines bite the dust and require electricity. Tools for pour over coffee are sustainable, plastic-free, and will last way longer than an electric coffee machine ever will.

There are some people that get pretty fancy when it comes to pour over coffee, but you guys know I’m a simple gal. I don’t use a scale to measure my grounds or water, I just measure using a tablespoon and glass measuring cup.

This method takes the same amount of time as it would to set up a coffee machine with fresh water, coffee grounds, turn it on, wait for it to get going and then brew the coffee. So for those wondering about not having extra time for fancy coffee in the morning before work- this method is still for you!

Why Slow Coffee is so Important to Me

While making coffee seems so minuscule, almost mundane, taking the time to slow down and make it a ritual instead of just another mindless activity we incorporate into our day, we are able to savor it as a little reminder to slow down and enjoy the simple things in life. By brewing our coffee slowly, silently, and with our hands, we are actively turning from convenience culture and instead connecting with a slower way of life.

See the video below for the exact way I brew my coffee each morning.
